I get asked that question a lot lately and the answer is…

Nicer than I thought in some ways and a total pain in the ass in others. Despite claims by some that the housing here is “adequate”, it’s nice. We’ve got 4 bedrooms, fenced in yard, bigger kitchen than we had before and pretty nice next door neighbors. I’m not complaining about the weather. Sure, it’s hot, but it isn’t humid and the pools are free so there’s really nothing to complain about! Unless you want to hear about my sunburn. Even that’s not all that bad and it’s mostly my fault. We do need to get out and explore more but money’s been a little tight so we haven’t been able too. University teaching gigs are great but gigs like mine don’t pay in the summer and, well, I moved right? So I don’t have a gig anymore and that’s most definitely unpaid. It just kind of sucks a little toward the end of every month is all. It’ll get better. If I have to deliver pizza, it will get better. I also need to compel myself to get out of the house even when I don’t really feel like it. I don’t like to shop so I put that off until it’s a horrifyingly expensive trip and I just don’t get the idea of paying $4.00 a gallon for gas to just drive around. I am, however, looking forward to exploring the city. Really I am. Soon!

Otherwise, things are going well. We’ve got some friends we see quite a bit. Coincidentally they were at Fort McCoy while we were and their kids and the Khan were in daycare there but we didn’t really know them there. I’d given Mrs. EOD my phone number once in daycare because another friend (mutual) had told her about us and that we were headed here. We managed to connect down here and it’s been fun. We get together on Fridays (or have both of the Fridays so far) to make pizzas and B. S. and we take the kids to the pool and all that. It’s social activity that never happened at Fort McCoy. I missed it! And I’m cyberstalking Becca on Ravelry, Twitter, Facebook and her blog which feels a little creepy but I think we’ll manage to meet up this week and it’ll be less weird. I think.

I’m mostly unpacked, not even close to organized and doing a very little bit of knitting. This is what I’m working on. I plan to make several in various colors because my swiffer’s getting quite a workout on these linoleum floors with the dog hair and the dust.

It makes me less angry that my perfect KT post got eaten yesterday. I’ll replace it tomorrow. It’s an SOB of the week! I’m sure you’ll be duly impressed by its awesomeness.

I have become more conscious lately of the size of my footprint on the world. Rising costs, environmental decimation and just my adversion to waste in general have me spending a lot of time thinking about how I can really shift my habits toward less unhealthy for both me and the planet ones. The first thing I did was to start teaching the boys how to recycle. It is such an easy thing but we’re so bad at it. We’re getting better.

I am also working on ways to avoid disposable things. Now, mind you, if we ever adopted another child that needed diapers, I would not go so far as to use cloth but I am trying to reuse shopping bags and have an assortment of cloth bags that I use at some stores. My next project is to recycle some fabric (old curtains) and make some neat looking ones that I’d use anywhere.

I also knitted this:

The concept of this is to reduce the amount of waste generated by those little cup sleeves you get when you buy coffee at a coffee shop. I think they also serve a purpose of identifying your bottle or glass readily and avoiding the sneaky steal of the bottle that sometimes happens in my house. Unfortunately, this one is a bit too small for its intended purpose. I guess I’ll have to go to B&N (Sigh, the sacrifices I make) and get a cup to measure so I can determine the proper size.

Trying to be a better world citizen works for me. Reuse and Recycle is a concept I can easily embrace. What about you?
